After the war, Amby worked as a seed salesman throughout Oregon, Washington and Idaho. During his travels he learned about production techniques and better growing methods. This motivated him to grow his own farm. With a loan from the seed company, Amby would go on to farm a modest 5 acres in the Milwaukie area growing radish and lettuces. He sold his farm fresh vegetables to local grocers in the area.
